How do we give authority to our personal curiosities as well as
increase our alertness to our relationships with a larger world. We
will draw from our experience gained through Somatics, Technique, and
Contact Improvisation, to inform our ability to make clear choices.
Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between sensation
and thought. What does the body/ mind have to say at the juncture of
decision making.
We will seek to illuminate and refine our personal
proficiencies and develop our attention to qualities of
movement. Because there has always been such a diverse
group of participants we will be offering multiple levels
of technique to challenge every student.
"The pioneers of Somatics introduced to the West an
alternative vision of health and the body, which emphasizes
an intimate integrity of movement, anatomical structure,
intelligence and spiritual consciousness. These teachers
encouraged respect for lived experience and the wisdom that
can be found through "attending to" rather than
"conquering" or "controlling" life processes." -Don Hanlon
Johnson The material offered will be an integration of
research into the interface between somatic modalities like
Body-Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, and the
Feldenkrais Method with dancing practices.
Premeditative thought allows us to pursue complex design. We will use
multiple methods of creative exploration to cultivate vision and then
frame an experience with certain compositional tools in mind.
Whether building conditions for an experience or connecting to the
properties of our surroundings, we look to take responsibility for our
relationship with our environment. This summer, we will question the
roles of spectator and figure, figure and object, figure and ground.
At the end of the two weeks, the students will have an opportunity to
perform in a formal show that seeks to challenge the traditional format
of the performance space. The creative process will be guided by the
faculty. In addition the students will be able to develop solo or group
work.
Contact Improvisation is about becoming a conscious mover
while creating partnership with yourself, gravity, and
other dancers. Our time will be spent developing basic
skills of the form, then using the form as a tool to
explore larger questions of relationship.
