Curriculum
Somatics
"The pioneers of Somatics introduced to the West an alternative vision of health and the body, which emphasizes an intimate integrity of movement, anatomical structure, intelligence and spiritual consciousness. These teachers encouraged respect for lived experience and the wisdom that can be found through "attending to" rather than "conquering" or "controlling" life processes. " - Don Hanlon Johnson
The material offered will be an integration of research into the interface between somatic modalities like Body-Mind Centering®, Alexander Technique®, and the Feldenkrais Method® with dancing practices.
Contact Improvisation
Contact Improvisation is about becoming a conscious mover while creating partnerships with yourself, your environment, and others. Our time will be spent developing the basic principles of the form; with special attention to warming up into the dance, rolling in and out of the floor, following the point of contact, and weight sharing.
Contemporary Dance Technique
We will seek to illuminate and refine our personal proficiencies and develop our attention to qualities of movement. We will offer multiple levels of technique in order to meet and challenge every student.
Yoga
In yoga, we work with our breath, listen to our bodies, move with clarity, and cultivate strength that supports our flexibility. Yoga allows us to focus
inward so that we can be sensitive to our boundaries as we face new challenges. We will seek to find a balance that invites integration, embodiment, and playfulness within the practice of yoga.
Improvisation
How do we balance the internal focus of kinesthetic experience with a generous and fully aware sense of what is going on around us? Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between sensation and thought. We will draw from our experience gained through Somatics, Technique, and Contact Improvisation to inform our ability to make clear choices in relation to content, time, and space. What does the body/mind have to say at the juncture of decision-making?
Composition and Site Specific Studies
Premeditative thought allows us to pursue complex design. We will use multiple methods of creative exploration to cultivate vision and then frame an experience with certain compositional tools in mind. We will take these methods and tools into settings outside the studio, so as to connect our craft to the properties of our surroundings.
The Art of Performance
As artists, we practice threading our work from idea to process to the moment of sharing with our audience. As performers, we practice presence. During the Intensive, we will look at how we bring ourselves to this moment. You are welcome to bring performance pieces or structures that you are currently working on.
Public Performance
At the end of the two weeks, the students will have an opportunity to perform in a formal show that seeks to challenge the traditional format of the performance space. The faculty will guide the creative process. In addition the students will be able to develop solo or group work.
